CANREADS Excerpt Policy

CANREADS encourages authors and publishers to share excerpts from their published CANREADS reviews to promote their books. This policy explains how excerpts may be used while ensuring reviews remain accurate, fairly represented, and properly attributed.

Authors, publishers, publicists, and booksellers may quote excerpts from a published CANREADS review for promotional purposes, including:

• Book covers and dust jackets
• Interior pages
• Retailer listings (e.g., Amazon, Indigo, Bookshop.org)
• Author and publisher websites
• Social media
• Newsletters
• Press releases
• Advertisements
• Sell sheets, catalogues, and other marketing materials

All excerpts must comply with the guidelines below.

 Every excerpt must clearly credit CANREADS.

Whenever possible, we also encourage linking directly to the published review on the CANREADS website.

Review excerpts must accurately reflect the original review.

Authors may:

• Quote complete sentences or brief passages.
• Omit words or sentences using an ellipsis (...) where appropriate, provided the omission does not change the reviewer's intended meaning.

Authors may not:

• Alter or rewrite the wording of a quotation.
• Remove surrounding context in a way that changes the meaning of the review.
• Attribute opinions to CANREADS that do not appear in the published review.
• Suggest that CANREADS endorsed the book beyond what is stated in the published review.

CANREADS reviews include bolded pull quotes selected by our editorial team.

These pull quotes are intended for promotional use and may be reproduced in accordance with this policy.

Authors are also welcome to quote other portions of the review, provided the quotation accurately reflects the published text.

CANREADS reviews remain the intellectual property of CANREADS.

Authors may:

• Link directly to the published review.
• Quote portions of the review under this policy.

Authors may not:

• Reproduce the review in its entirety on another website or platform without prior written permission from CANREADS.
• Present a full review in a manner that implies it originated anywhere other than CANREADS.

If CANREADS publishes a corrected or revised version of a review, future promotional excerpts should be taken from the most recent published version.

A positive quotation from a CANREADS review does not imply that a book has received a CANREADS Award, been shortlisted, or received any additional endorsement beyond the published review.

Awards recognition may only be advertised if officially awarded by CANREADS.
