Compensation & Assignments

Types of Assignments

CANREADS offers two types of reviewer assignments:

  • Awards Evaluations – These may involve brief written comments in some cases, or simply submitting numbered ratings based on specific award criteria.

  • Critical Reviews – These require a full written review suitable for publication and promotional use (approximately 350 words, or 250 words for children’s books).

The format and expectations for each assignment will always be clearly outlined in advance.

About Compensation

CANREADS compensates reviewers with gift cards (Amazon or Indigo) rather than direct monetary payments. This allows us to work with reviewers across different countries without the administrative and banking barriers of international payments.

This role is best suited to avid readers who enjoy engaging closely with books in their preferred genres and contributing professional, reader-facing reviews. It may also be of interest to publishing students, early-career professionals, and industry professionals who are interested in reviewing, book discovery, and gaining additional experience in editorial and publicity-focused work. CANREADS also hosts networking events that connect reviewers with authors, editors, publishers, literary agents, and other industry professionals.

As a small, independent start-up without external grant funding, this compensation model aligns with standard per-review practices across professional review platforms and helps us remain sustainable while recognizing reviewers’ time and work. If you have any questions about compensation, we’re always happy to clarify—transparency matters to us.

Introductory Track

New reviewers start here. After completing at least one successful written review and one numbered evaluation, you’ll receive a $20 Amazon or Indigo gift card as a thank-you for your time and thoughtful work. We also provide constructive feedback and editorial guidance to support your development on future reviews.

Pay-Per-Review

After completing the introductory track, you will become eligible to join our Pay-Per-Review Program. Compensation ranges from $10 to $30 per book, depending on the type of review.

Payment will be made via gift cards (Amazon or Indigo), issued at the end of every month. We issue all gift cards in CAD; the value is converted to the recipient's local currency at the time of redemption.

We truly appreciate the time and effort you put into your reviews, and this program is one way we recognize and reward our contributors.

How to Apply

Follow these steps:

  1. Complete a Short Assessment: This helps us ensure you can provide high-quality, succint reviews. Assessment details can be found below.
  2. Fill Out the Form: Provide your details and express your interest. You'll find the application form at the bottom of this page. Make sure to attach your assessment.
  3. Get Vetted: We take this process seriously to maintain the standard of our reviews. Our in-house team of editors will review your assessment and determine if you’re the right fit for us.

Requirements

  • Age: You must be 18 or older.
  • Assessment: Successfully complete the short assessment outlined below to demonstrate your reviewing skills.
  • Professionalism: We value detailed, well-read reviews that meet our standards.
  • Language: Must be proficient in reading and writing English.
  • Shipping: While we work with international reviewers, we can only ship books to reviewers who reside in Canada. International reviewers must be comfortable working with an electronic version (EPUB or PDF).

Assessment Details

We want to ensure you can effectively summarize and critique a book while demonstrating a strong command of the English language and also using enticing one-liners. While we have professional editors, we seek intelligent reviewers from the start who know how to write about a book in a way that will draw readers in.

We aim for a tone similar to that found in professional reviews, such as those from Kirkus Reviews or Publisher's Weekly. We highly encourage applicants to look at professional reviews and front cover taglines on books they own to see the language we are looking for.

Please provide two short samples of book review from books you've recently read. If you have previous promotional review samples, feel free to submit those instead. Submit in PDF format.

Each sample should be approximately 150 words and include:

  • A concise summary, highlighting key themes and unique elements in an engaging way.
  • A balanced critique, emphasizing the book’s strengths while addressing any areas of improvement with clear examples.
  • Use strong, impactful one-liners that the author can easily pull for press or marketing. Refrain from using "I" language. For example, instead of "This novel was a great read, I was hooked," you could say, "This novel masterfully intertwines passion and suspense, keeping readers hooked from start to finish."
  • Focus on creating punchy, marketable language, ensuring the review serves both as an evaluation and a versatile promotional tool across platforms. You can add a personal touch, but the tone needs to remain professional. The pull lines should be weaved throughout. It should pull readers in.

We take plagiarism seriously and expect our reviewers to not copy any parts of a book description or opinions from any sources. All reviews must be your own words. We run our reviews through a plagiarism checker. Reviewers caught plagiarizing will be immediately dismissed from reviewing for us.

If this sounds like the perfect gig for you, fill out the form and assessment below. Join us in promoting literary excellence while indulging in your love for books!
