A beautiful, emotionally resonant saga, Externalities by D. McCall Johnston transports readers from picturesque, 1950’s Tuscany to the varied and evolving landscapes of Canada, tracing the shifting bonds within the Gallorini family over the course of several decades. From the very first page, readers are thrown into a whirlwind romance between two young lovers that you can’t help but root for. Their journey from their beloved homeland to the possibilities of Canada is rendered with warmth, vivid detail, and the heartfelt optimism that defines so many immigrant stories.
But what begins as a charming tale soon evolves into something far more intricate—a narrative full of winding turns, twists, and betrayals. Johnston skillfully weaves suspense, intrigue, and tragedy into the Gallorinis’ experience, reminding us of life’s unpredictable nature and the unseen costs of chasing one’s dreams. As the story moves into the second generation and readers meet the hardworking and studious Marie, the loyal and practical Ana, and the spoiled and wayward Michael, the novel expands its scope. Johnston’s command of setting is notable, transporting readers from the bustling streets of Toronto to the laid-back shores of Sauble Beach with brilliant cinematic detail. Each location becomes a backdrop for personal triumphs and heartbreaks as the siblings confront love, resentment, and bigotry, all while trying to make their own way in life.
One of the most unique elements in Externalities is its portrayal of the immigrant experience. Johnston isn’t afraid to explore the lows of discrimination and alienation for an Italian immigrant family from the 50’s to the aughts. But everything needs balance: celebrating resilience, maintaining culture, and creating new experiences and traditions are a much-needed reprieve from the darker subjects. The multigenerational conflicts, especially the gripping legal battle involving the second generation and their parents’ will, raises the stakes and highlights how old secrets can tear apart even the most tight-knit of families. Ultimately, the exploration of discrimination, cultural preservation, and generational tensions in Externalities feels timely and heartfelt, recognizing both the hardships and the strength that defines many immigrant families.
Although the novel offers many emotional touchpoints and engaging settings, some elements may leave readers wanting more. At times, the prose and dialogue can read more like a summary than a fully immersive narrative, creating some distance from the characters’ inner lives. Further, certain character arcs stay surface-level, with the light tone keeping the book from exploring its themes—identity, belonging, ambition—in greater depth. Readers who prefer layered prose and deeper character studies may find this more cozy than literary. Still, its straightforward, fast-paced style will appeal to those who enjoy clear, accessible storytelling and the familiar comfort of a gently told family saga.
With its diverse cast, sweeping timeline, and earnest exploration of loyalty, identity, and the sacrifices families make for one another, Johnston's Externalities offers a tender, engaging reading experience that is sure to stay with readers. It is a story about dreams gained and dreams lost, the ties that bind across generations, and the quiet, enduring strength of family—even in its most complicated forms.
