A master of deception, Gary D. McGugan’s flair for suspense and subterfuge may be at its finest in the sixth addition to his Multima series, A Slippery Shadow. This installment draws its name from a sinister new character, The Shadow, who is wreaking havoc for The Organization and Multima alike. No matter how many times the criminal element and the massive corporation try to untangle themselves once and for all, they seem to be inextricably linked in a way no one in either outlet fully understands.

Suzanne Simpson and the Multima team know nothing about the new criminal mastermind—they only see the damaging effects of The Shadow’s actions. But the aftermath, combined with other recent events at Multima and the fear of living in a world riddled with COVID-19, has them spooked. After a litany of betrayals from some of those closest to her, Suzanne is tightening her inner circle and struggling to figure out what to do next.

Fidelia Morales and her subordinates at The Organization are also in the dark, but they’re one step ahead of the Multima team, learning of The Shadow’s existence through whispered conversations and their own series of disloyalties. As with anyone who dares to cross her, Fidelia is soon out for blood, and her determination to track down The Shadow (and anyone who has changed allegiance) is both awe-inducing and terrifying.

This quest for retribution paired with the mysterious identity of The Shadow creates the same intensity as films like Memento—knowing a wrong must be avenged without knowing who must pay the price means readers switch between the heart-racing thrill that comes with a chase, and the edge-of-your seat suspense that comes from the unknown.

The twists and turns in A Slippery Shadow will leave readers breathless, as McGugan continues to deliver the unexpected at every turn. Despite appearing in five previous books, McGugan’s characters are just as fresh and interesting in book six as they were in book one—arguably more so. And while each book is a treat as an a la carte option, it is clear that every installment pieces together in a larger, masterful puzzle of a buffet that will be more explosive and enthralling than anything that’s come before, keeping readers committed to the series until the very end. If you haven’t yet entered the world of Multima, now is the perfect time to dive into this gripping series of high-stakes suspense, intrigue, and betrayal.
