The thrill of the chase drives the story and the suspense in Pernicious Pursuit, the fourth book in Gary D. McGugan’s Multima series. This time, McGugan deviates from his traditional cast of the Multima team and takes readers to Europe as he dives into the gripping story of Howard Knight. The former Multima Board Director and disgraced member of the crime syndicate named The Organization has been on the run since the end of book one. In this new installment, McGugan peels back the layers of Howard’s character as he transforms him from the villain you loved to hate into someone you can’t help but root for. Now living under Witness Protection alongside another former Organization member, Janet Wiessel, Howard’s attempts at living a normal life are upended when disaster shows up at his door.
While Howard is undoubtedly the star of the show, Janet emerges as a powerhouse in her own right. She makes up for the missing female strength that Suzanne Simpson normally brings to the table. Strong, stunning, and fiercely strategic, Janet’s ceaseless pursuit of justice—and revenge—is both exhilarating and empowering. Her chapters bring a distinct but equally captivating energy to the narrative, complementing Howard’s as they both strategize to outwit Giancarlo Mareno, the ruthless leader of The Organization.
Seeing the story from all sides as always, McGugan also takes readers inside the devious, destructive, and devilish mind of the mob boss, showcasing the strategies he uses to protect himself, and how he exacts revenge—sometimes in excruciating detail. From his elaborate revenge schemes to his terrifying control over illegal operations like human trafficking and drugs, Giancarlo’s world is both terrifying and titillating, and it is sure to send shivers down your spine as you quickly devour each page.
The meticulous planning behind Giancarlo’s elaborate schemes adds a flair reminiscent of Ocean’s Eleven, while the life-threatening missions and daring decisions of both hunter and prey evoke the intensity of The Bourne Identity. What truly distinguishes McGugan, however, is his knack for delivering unexpected twists. Just when you think you’ve figured it out, he pulls the rug out from under you. The seamless blend of intelligent storytelling, complex characters, and relentless pacing makes Pernicious Pursuit an unmissable read for thriller enthusiasts.
