In Rochelle Wolf's Act Two, Gabriella is navigating life post-breakup with theatre actor Jenna. When Jenna unexpectedly reappears, seeking friendship, old feelings are stirred. Gabriella needs to figure out if there’s more to their breakup and if they’re both open to giving their love another shot. Act Two offered everything a reader could want: a sapphic romance, a happily-ever-after, and easily identifiable Toronto references! As someone who recently attended the Mean Girls The Musical run at Mirvish, I was hooked from scene one.

Told from Gabriella’s first-person perspective, Wolf crafts a believable and engaging romance. Gabriella and Jenna were a likeable couple, and their relationship had great chemistry. As a reader, I was invested in their reunion, and I was glad they got the happily-ever-after they deserved! The absence of the typical “third-act” miscommunication or drama felt authentic because it didn’t cheapen the relationship or how they came back together.  This is a timeless story of two characters who are willing to make it work no matter what.

The spice fell mainly in the “told, not shown” bracket, making Wolf’s novel a great fit for readers who prefer romances that don’t depict sexual specifics. The scenes teetered on the edge of open and closed doors for those who are dipping their toes into spicy romance novels.

Ultimately, Act Two was a short and sweet sapphic romance with tongue-in-cheek theatre-inspired elements. It is the perfect read for anyone wanting a low-angst, sapphic-forward, happy-ending romance!
